Marquee Draft Report: Roddick & Stephens to Play for Freedoms; Venus To Visit

The Philadelphia Freedoms selected American standout and tennis champion Andy Roddick (left) in the 2017 Mylan World TeamTennis (WTT) Draft today. This will be the 10th Mylan WTT season for Roddick, who has won 32 singles titles on the ATP World Tour, including the 2003 US Open. Roddick was ranked in the Top 10 for nine consecutive years, and also added four doubles titles to his list during his ATP tour career. Roddick will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in July.

It’s great to be back on the Freedoms’ team and playing for Billie Jean,” said Roddick, who last suited up for Philadelphia in 2010. “I have always loved the WTT format and the energy of team competition. The fans really get into the matches so that makes it an exciting experience for everyone. It’s about getting wins for the Freedoms so I hope to do my part to help the team this summer.”

One of the best tennis players of all time, Venus Williams (right), will also take the court as a visiting Marquee player during the 2017 season playing for the Washington Kastles. A former world No. 1 in both singles and doubles, Williams recently made an inspiring run to the Australian Open final.

In addition to Roddick, the Freedoms also selected Sloane Stephens, a rising American tennis player. Stephens is entering her second Mylan WTT season, and has earned an impressive 4 career WTA singles titles. In 2013, at age 19, Stephens finished with a World No. 11 ranking, the only woman ranked inside the WTA top 30 that year under the age of 20.

The Freedoms 2017 season is presented by AmerisourceBergen. In January, the Freedoms announced that they would play all of their 2017 home matches at their new home, Hagan Arena at Saint Joseph’s University.
