Freedoms Add Vandeweghe, Spears and Muhammad to Replace Huber

The Philadelphia Freedoms have added three top Americans to their roster for the 40th Mylan World TeamTennis season which begins next month at Villanova. CoCo Vandeweghe, Abigail Spears and Asia Muhammad will replace the Freedoms’ doubles player Liezel Huber who will miss the 2015 season due to health reasons.


Vandeweghe is currently ranked at world No. 47 in singles on the WTA Tour. Vandeweghe made her professional tennis debut in 2007 and earlier this year, achieved her best major singles result by reaching the third round at the Australian Open. Vandeweghe has played Fed Cup for Team USA, including in the 2015 victory over Argentina. In 2014, she captured her first WTA singles title at the Topshelf Open grass event in the Netherlands. This is the sixth Mylan WTT season for the native Californian.


Abigail Spears is currently ranked No.14 in the world in woman’s doubles earning 16 doubles titles in her career. Spears reached her career high ranking of world No. 10 in doubles in March of 2015. This is the sixth Mylan WTT season for Spears, and her first in Philadelphia. 


Muhammad won her first WTA doubles title earlier this month at the Topshelf Open with Laura Siegemund. Muhammad reached a career high doubles ranking of No. 91 in June, 2015. She also holds 13 International Tennis Federation (ITF) titles. This is the second Mylan WTT season for Muhammad who previously played for Sacramento in 2012.


Vandeweghe, Spears and Muhammad join a Freedoms team that also includes Taylor Townsend, Robby Ginepri and 2015 French Open doubles champion Marcelo Melo. Josh Cohen is the Philadelphia coach.
