Welcome to Philly, Karolina & Kristyna Pliskova!
The Freedoms drafted four dynamic players to its 2012 team in the World TeamTennis Roster Draft on March 13.
Freedoms fans will truly be “seeing double” at the Villanova Pavilion this summer. In a tactical move, the Freedoms drafted Czech Republic stand out Karolina Pliskova with the No. 1 overall pick and then drafted her identical twin sister Kristyna Pliskova in the second round.
Right-handed Karolina was the 2010 Australian Open junior singles champion, has won six ITF titles and has a current singles ranking of 132. Her left-handed sister Kristyna was the 2010 Wimbledon junior singles champion, qualified into Wimbledon’s main draw last year and is currently ranked no. 148 in singles. Karolina is ranked 103 and Kristyna is ranked 113 in the world doubles rankings.
The Freedoms then drafted Slovenia’s Luka Gregorc to its roster in the third round. At Wimbledon in 2009, Gregorc became the first male Slovenian player to qualify for a Grand Slam. On the way to the semifinals of New Haven in 2008, he recorded wins over Jose Acasuso, Ivo Karlovic and Andreas Seppi. Gregorc has also played doubles for Slovenia the Davis Cup.
In the fourth and final round of the draft, the Freedoms added Australian doubles standout Jordan Kerr, a nine-time doubles titlist. In 2008, he represented Australia in the Beijing Olympics and has played in 13 Australian Opens.
All four roster players will make their World TeamTennis debut with the Freedoms on Opening Night, July 10, at the Pavilion. The team, which already includes Freedoms marquee player appearances by James Blake and Mark Philippoussis, is sure to produce some incredible must-see tennis in 2012.
Freedoms individual match tickets go on-sale March 20 at 10 AM.
