PHILADELPHIA FREEDOMS DRAFT AMERICAN TEEN SENSATION
SLOANE STEPHENS IN TODAY’S MYLAN WTT MARQUEE DRAFT
Andy Roddick and Bryan Brothers to visit Villanova
February 12, 2013 (PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) – The Philadelphia Freedoms selected No. 2 ranked American player and 2013 Australian Open semifinalist Sloane Stephens (right) with their first pick in the 2013 Mylan World TeamTennis Marquee Draft this afternoon.
The Philadelphia Freedoms also announced a superstar lineup of visiting players including Andy Roddick and the world's top-ranked doubles team Bob and Mike Bryan. These tennis greats will each play one match against the Freedoms this July at Villanova University in Mylan World TeamTennis presented by GEICO.
Fresh off of her breakthrough run at the 2013 Australian Open, 19-year-old Sloane Stephens will join the Freedoms for her second Mylan World TeamTennis season. Currently the No. 17 player in the world - her career high - Stephens advanced to the semifinals in Melbourne by defeating Serena Williams, the only time Williams has ever lost to a younger American player. Aside from a fierce backhand, Stephens is known for raising tennis' social media profile—she tweeted on-court immediately following her defeat of Serena (Twitter handle: @sloanetweets). Stephens played for Mylan World TeamTennis’ historic all-amateur team in 2009.
Former world No. 1 and 2003 US Open Champion Andy Roddick (left) will return to Philadelphia after playing as a member of the Freedoms team in 2010. This year Roddick will play for the Springfield Lasers in his first competitive professional matches since the 2012 US Open. In 2010, Roddick led the Freedoms to a 24-17 win over the Boston Lobsters in front of a sellout crowd at The Pavilion.
Bob and Mike Bryan (below right) return to Philadelphia following their 2012 Olympic gold medal win. The record-setting brothers have held the year-end number one ranking for eight of the last ten years and recently won their 13th career Grand Slam doubles title at the 2013 Australian Open. They will take the court with the new Texas Wild team from Irving, Texas. This will be the Bryans’ 11th season of Mylan WTT competition.
Team rosters will be completed with the 2013 Mylan WTT Roster Draft on Tuesday, March 12 at Noon ET. The draft may be followed live on WTT.com/RosterDraft with real-time updates on the Freedoms’ Facebook and Twitter pages.
