PHILADELPHIA FREEDOMS DEFEAT BOSTON LOBSTERS, 18-17
Villanova, PA (July 25, 2012) – Mark Philippoussis led the Freedoms in a thrilling victory against the Boston Lobsters with a final score of 18-17. For the Freedoms’ last home match, Philippoussis returned to Philadelphia to play for the Freedoms after a 10-year hiatus.
The Freedoms started out the night strong with Kristyna Pliskova and Mark Philippoussis bringing a 5-2 mixed doubles win over Lobsters’ Eric Butorac and Irina Falconi. In the second set, the Freedoms’ Kristyna Pliskova fell to Lobsters’ Irina Falconi in women’s singles, 1-5. In a heated men’s doubles third set, Freedoms’ Mark Philippoussis and Jordan Kerr defeated Jan-Michael Gambill and Eric Butorac, 5-2.
At the start of the second half, the Freedoms womens doubles team of Kristyna and Karolina Pliskova were defeated by Lobsters’ Irina Falconi and Carly Gullickson-Eagle in the fourth set, 2-5. The final, and most heated, set of the night pitted Freedoms’ marquee Mark Philippoussis against Lobsters’ Jan-Michael Gambill. In a set that was hard-played and intense from the first point, with both Philippoussis and Gambill alternating games won, Philippoussis won the last two games securing a 5-3 victory. The final match score was Freedoms 18 and Lobsters 17.
