Freedoms Win Home Opener 22-18 Over Aces

King of Prussia, Pa. (July 6, 2009) – In the home-opener of their 2009 season, the Philadelphia Freedoms defeated the visiting St. Louis Aces 22-18.

The Freedoms started off the night prevailing in men’s doubles 5-3.  Nathan Healey and Travis Parrott, currently the no. 25-ranked doubles player in the world, defeated Mislav Hizak and Tripp Phillips of the Aces.  In the next set, 14 year-old Madison Keys became the youngest player to ever play World TeamTennis when she took to the court against the Aces’ Ashley Weinhold in women’s singles.  Though Keys looked impressive in her WTT debut, Weinhold took the set 5-3.

In men’s singles, Healey, a resident of Reading, PA, defeated Hizak of the Aces 5-3.  This match marked Healey’s return to Philadelphia as a member of the Freedoms after last playing for the Freedoms in 2003.  Hometown hero Lisa Raymond returned to her “home” court at the King of Prussia Mall in impressive fashion.  The five-time Grand Slam women’s doubles champion teamed with 14 year-old Keys to defeat Liga Dekmeijere and Weinhold 5-2.

Staving off defeat, the Aces won mixed doubles as Dekmeijere\Phillips defeated Raymond\Healey 5-3, sending the match to sudden death overtime.  The Freedoms quickly dispatched the Aces, winning the first game to take the match 22-18.

Prior to tonight’s match, Anna Kournikova of the Aces participated in a Quickstart tennis children’s clinic presented by USTA Middle States.  Though unable to play due to a wrist injury sustained while practicing for the WTT season, Kournikova stayed for the match to root for her teammates and joined the Freedoms and her Aces teammates for a post-match autograph session for children 16 and under.

The Freedoms next home match is this Wednesday, July 8 and features Wimbledon finalist Venus Williams playing her only home match of the season for the Freedoms.  Less than one week later, Venus’ sister, 2009 Wimbledon Champion Serena Williams, will be playing in Freedoms Stadium on Monday, July 13 for the visiting Washington Kastles.  Tickets for both matches can be purchased by calling 866-WTT-TIXS or visiting
