Anderson and Stephens Advance to Second Round in MelbourneJanuary 15, 2019
Sloane Stephens advances to the Second Round of the Australian Open after defeating Taylor Townsend. Stephens will face reigning Australian Open Women's Doubles champion Timea Babos. Babos has a career high Singles ranking of #25 and is currently ranked #3 in Doubles. This is a match-up of former Doubles partners. In 2010, Stephens and Babos won the Girl's Doubles Junior Championship at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
Kevin Anderson defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1. With the victory, Anderson sets up a Second Round match-up with Freedoms WTT Rival Washington Kastles' own Frances Tiafoe, who is currently ranked #39 in the world. In 2018, Anderson beat Tiafoe in all three of their meetings.
Gaby Dabrowski and Yifan Xu are the #3 overall seed in Women's Doubles and will play Barbora Strycova and Marketa Vondrousova. Last year, Dabrowski won the Australian Open Mixed Doubles Title. The draw for Mixed Doubles will be announced later this week.
In Men's Doubles, Freedoms star Fabrice Martin teams up with fellow Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy. Martin and Chardy meet Americans Mackenzie McDonald and Tennys Sandgren, also of the Washington Kastles, in the First Round.
Taylor Townsend enters the Women's Doubles Draw with Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The duo is matched-up against Alexa Guarachi and Alison Van Uytvanck.
Raquel Atawo is the #9 seed with Katarina Srebotnik. Atawo and Srebotnik go up against Danielle Collins and Amanda Anisimova.
